Mesh is paying customers $8 to upgrade their computers to Windows 7.
Vista’s release famously failed to shift new PCs, with DSG – the group behind Dixons – claiming it had lost almost $32.5 million due to poor uptake of the troubled operating system.
Mesh is clearly hoping to avoid a repeat and anybody who buys a new computer and selects Windows 7 as their OS will receive a free upgrade when it’s released on 22 October 2009, as well as $8 off their system.
The company claims the $8 is proof of its confidence in the new operating system. “From Mesh’s internal testing it appears that customers who run with Windows 7 will actually place less of a strain on technical support and customer service. The value of that reduction in support calls has been valued at $8,” says a Mesh spokesperson.
“From Mesh’s point of view, Windows Vista was the first step, whereas Windows 7 can much more accurately be characterised as the fulfilment,” she concludes.
HP is offering a similar scheme in an attempt to ensure people don’t wait for the Windows 7 launch before buying a new PC, however that offer is limited to specific models. Mesh promises that its scheme will apply to its entire range.
Computers ordered now will be delivered with Windows Vista, with the upgrade sent out after Windows 7 has been launched.
